MBT informed counselling is provided for both children and adults with issues such as affect regulation difficulties, conduct problems, interpersonal conflicts, self-harm and parental challenges.

What is MBT?

Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT) is an evidence-based, time-limited clinical method applied to help individuals grow his/her capacity to mentalize, thus to better understand thoughts, behaviours, intentions and emotions of others and ourselves in order to improve the stability of our emotional life and the quality of our intra- as well as interpersonal relationships. The approach is also used in public mental health services in the canton of Geneva, such as Office Médico-Pédagogique (OMP).

How do we proceed?

  1. Initial meetings: What are the difficulties you face? What are the issues at home/ work? What would you like to improve in your life? We’ll take 2-3 sessions to understand the issues to be treated, followed by the discussion of whether or not this particular method is appropriate for your concerns.
  2. Formulating the issue: We will then specify the recurrent issues and formulate the pattern of such problems in order to set a clear target of our work together.
  3. Sessions and revisions: We’ll start working, applying specific methods of MBT for approximately 25 sessions, and at the end of the period we will decide whether or not further treatment will be necessary.
